Loose lips sink … cybersecurity

Frustrating, isn’t it, when a meeting gets derailed because someone has a ‘curious’ interpretation of the spoken word?  Or when a support request or incident report is so vague that you can’t actually pin it down?

Everyday miscommunications mislead people, waste time and create unnecessary risk. For a field as critical as ours, ambiguity is a luxury we can no longer afford.

I am delighted to announce the forthcoming release of the Cybersecurity Hyperglossary in just a month’s time.

Its publication marks a substantial progression for the discipline, a key part of the global effort to stop treating cybersecurity as an esoteric and obscure tradecraft

Cybersecurity is coming of age, becoming an accepted profession alongside the lawyers, accountants and medics.

Professional excellence

Cybersecurity professionals:

  • Exhibit integrity, skill, competence and accountability in our work, proactively learning and continually improving;

  • Deliver on meaningful commitments;

  • Maintain and expect high standards of conduct;

  • Communicate effectively and efficiently, even when under pressure.

People willingly turn to us for guidance and direction, not because we demand respect but because we earn their trust.  Consistency, clarity and precision are key.

In addition to our expertise in cybersecurity, as professionals we understand related specialisms such as governance and the management of risk, security, information and technologies.

We encourage and enable achievement of business, personal and societal objectives, including compliance obligations and ethical responsibilities.

My part in the professionalisation of cybersecurity is simple: I’m laser-focused on maturing the language.

A standardised, common vocabulary forms the bedrock of professional excellence, enabling clear communication among all involved - security practitioners, developers, managers, the board and regulators, and Joe Public.

I’m driven by a simple objective: Insight >> Words.

By defining our terms-of-art with precision and context, the Cybersecurity Hyperglossary empowers straightforward communications, better decision-making and strategic alignment across the enterprise and beyond.

The Cybersecurity Hyperglossary is essential reading for:

  • CISOs and leaders seeking enterprise- and industry-wide consistency and clarity.

  • Managers at all levels dealing with information risks and security controls.

  • Security architects and engineers building robust, clearly-defined systems.

  • Security analysts, specialists and practitioners who need to communicate urgently and meaningfully.

  • Students, educators and researchers exploring and expanding the field.

  • Journalists, editors, bloggers … and their readers struggling to grasp the intricacies.

It’s an educational resource, a prompt to communicate more precisely and a pragmatic reference for us all to share. Let’s rise above disagreements over the fundamentals, driving progress through common understanding and insight.
